Protect Elementor Forms from spam with a captcha, and the cache trap

Marc Wagner·October 7, 2026·5 min read

Elementor Pro’s Form widget is protected by SilentShield with one switch, and there is one trap to know about: Elementor’s page cache. This guide shows the steps with screenshots. It was tested on 7 October 2026 with Elementor 4.3.4, Elementor Pro 4.2.1, SilentShield 2.15.14 and WordPress 7.1.2. The captcha method and the other protection layers are covered in the general setup guide. The test used the plugin’s own captcha layers without an API key; the compatibility list for the SilentShield API is in the WordPress guide.

Step 1: Build your form with the Form widget

Add the Form widget to a page in the Elementor editor and set up your fields as usual. The Form widget is part of Elementor Pro. Until you switch a form plugin on, SilentShield shows a notice on every admin page saying it is active but not protecting any form yet.

Step 2: Switch on Elementor in SilentShield

SilentShield Forms page: the Elementor integration is switched on with the badges “Detected” and “Fields detected”, a message “Elementor enabled” appears at the bottom right, and the other integrations are off

Open SilentShield → Forms and switch on Elementor. The switch saves immediately and confirms with the message “Elementor enabled”; the badge changes from “Disabled” to “Fields detected”. Elementor forms are not listed one by one: the switch covers every Form widget on your site.

Step 3: If the page was open before, clear Elementor’s cache

Elementor keeps the rendered form of a page in its own cache. If a page was opened while the Elementor switch was still off, that cached, unprotected form can keep being served after you switch it on. We reproduced this: with the cache written while the switch was off, the page showed no captcha field after switching on; after running wp elementor flush-css the field was there. If you work without the command line, use Elementor → Tools → Regenerate CSS & Data; we tested the command, not the menu entry.

Step 4: Check the form as a visitor

Open the page in a private browser window. Administrators and logged-in users skip all checks by default, so a test while you are logged in shows nothing. With the math captcha chosen, the captcha appears between the fields, with a reload button next to the question.

Step 5: Test a wrong answer

Elementor form after a wrong answer: the red message “Spam detected: Captcha check” under the Name field and “Your submission failed because of an error.” under the Send button

Enter a wrong answer and click Send. Elementor marks the form as failed and shows “Spam detected: Captcha check” under the field, followed by “Your submission failed because of an error.” under the button.

Step 6: Test a correct answer

Elementor form after a correct answer: the green message “Your submission was successful.” under the Send button, the fields are empty and the captcha shows a new question

Reload the form and answer correctly. Elementor shows its normal success message, “Your submission was successful.”, and the captcha renews.

What to know

  • The captcha method, the timer, the gibberish detection and the rules apply to Elementor forms like to every other form. See the general setup guide.
  • The integration is detected through the Elementor plugin; the Form widget itself needs Elementor Pro.
  • If a caching or optimisation plugin delays JavaScript until the first interaction, exclude SilentShield’s scripts from that; the WordPress guide lists the file names.
